Inspired by my lived experience as a migrant, my work challenges dominant narratives to foster a deeper understanding of South Asian diaspora by examining how textiles can carry cultural heritage, historical contexts and personal narratives of migration. The primary focus of my art practice is to investigate and explore lived experiences of diaspora using decolonial methods and a return to ancestral practices through familial archives as primary sources. I intend to explore the nuances of women’s labour and unravel stories of strength and resilience that are woven into the fabric of women’s lives through my practice that centers textile installation, hand embroidery and creative writing. My aim is to highlight the role and history of women’s cultural work as embroiderers and how needlework may heal ancestral wounds.
