Description

“Be Still” reflects a quiet moment of grounding and inner awareness. I created this piece as a reminder to slow down and listen to the parts of ourselves that often get pushed aside. The layered texture of the fiber mirrors the layered emotions that come with stillness, clarity, and healing. This work honors the intimate pauses Black women deserve and the beauty that emerges when we choose to be present with ourselves.

About the Maker

Meet Brianna Pippens

Silver Spring, MD

My background is rooted in the arts. As a trained singer and dancer, I grew up with an appreciation for creativity, expression, and the ways art can shape how we understand ourselves and the world. Those early experiences taught me discipline, storytelling, and how to connect emotion to form, and they laid the foundation for everything I do. Over time I decided to dive deeper into visual arts, teaching myself illustration, painting, and digital creation. I built my practice piece by piece, guided by curiosity, intuition, and a genuine love for making. During the pandemic I found myself especially drawn to fiber art, and punch needle in particular quickly became a meaningful part of my creative life. The tactile nature of the medium, the rhythm of building texture, and the meditative quality of the process opened up a new way for me to express memory, emotion, and identity. My background brings all of these influences together. The movement and musicality I learned as a performer inform the flow, composition, and feeling in my visual work. The patience and craft of fiber art deepen my connection to material and storytelling. And across every medium, I am committed to creating work that reflects who I am, who I come from, and the communities that have shaped me.
