Description
The cocoon, the womb, symbolizes something greater than the process of transformation and life. The piece draws on primordial life forms and interconnected networks—such as fungi, mycelium, and early-form amphibians—layered into the work as a reminder of our shared origins as humans, a commonality within us all.
It touches on the fragility of the collective consciousness, mourns the loss of our inner knowing, and points toward the imbalance of masculine and feminine energy that has led to the erasure of biodiversity, both physical and spiritual. This piece honours ancestral ties that have been severed, displaced, and erased through tools of oppression such as fear, shame, and the colonial gaze—especially as projected onto AFAB bodies and black women, whose femininity has been hypersexualized and policed.
Craft and toolmaking are deeply rooted in generational memory and often carry the weight of ancestral trauma. These practices, traditionally passed down through maternal lines, have shaped human consciousness across time. To honour and reclaim them today is a radical act of remembrance and resistance. There is a grieving process emulated in this piece, highlighting the shadow of divine feminine energy. It is the embodiment of alchemy, and the source of this alchemy is grief.
Beyond the function of the womb as the source of life, it is also the source of pleasure. Its release is a reclamation of that energy, not lost, but revealed once again. In its true form, the womb is the source of feminine liberation for all, both sexual and spiritual.
